Kavanagh Green Plaque Installed

Two weeks ago the City installed the plaque commemorating the Kavanagh Green site at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Hazeldean Road. This was the final step to complete this unique gathering space. Back in August, I had the pleasure of joining Mayor Watson, Sharon Kavanagh along with friends and family to officially open the park.

The Kavanagh family has a strong connection to the Stittsville community through many important contributions. For over 24 years the family owned and operated the Stittsville Flea Market, a popular gathering place for many residents across the City and beyond. The dedicated time and efforts to the Food Bank, Holy Spirit Church and the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice.

It has been a pleasure seeing the activity that takes place at what was once a passive green space –  residents now taking advantage of the various features to enjoy; including a bocce court, a gazebo, games tables (chess and checkers), a putting green, and a fitness station.

City seeking public input on three commemorative naming proposals

The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultations on three separate naming proposals including one in Stittsville to name rink A of Goulbourn Recreation Complex, “Katie Xu and Jack Fan Rink”.

 

The summary of the application reads:

In recognition of the outstanding figure skating accomplishments of Katie Xu and Jack Fan, a proposal to name Rink A in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex has been submitted to the Commemorative Naming Committee. Since they joined the Goulbourn Skating Club in 2011, Katie and Jack have served as ambassadors for the special needs community. Both skaters have received recognition from Skate Canada and Special Olympics Canada for excellent performances in many competitions, and both took home medals in the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.

 

Both Katie and Jack are hardworking athletes active in the Stittsville community. Last year, Jack was named Male Athlete of the Year by Special Olympics Canada and both were nominated for Youth Citizen of the Year at the Stittsville Appreciation Awards.

City Council Approves Kavanagh Green Commemorative Naming Proposal

I am pleased to share that this week, City Councillor approved the commemorative naming proposal to name a new park area Kavanagh Green.

 

In recognition of the Kavanagh family’s historical significance to the community of Stittsville, the name was proposed for a future park to be constructed at the southwest corner intersection of Hazeldean road and Stittsville Main Street.  This park will be under construction in 2018 and will provide a variety of park features including items that will be promote an active lifestyle for the seniors, as well as all members of the community.  For more information on the park plans please visit my website here.

Commemorative Naming of Mary Durling Park

On October 20^th, I had the honour of being part of the official renaming of Mary During Park, formerly Cypress Gardens Park, located at 33 Brae Crescent.

 

Mary Durling was a well known member of this community and an active volunteer in this area for many years.  Through her volunteer work, Mary formed rich ties to this community and an overwhelming amount of public support was received during the public consultation for this proposal.
Mary Durling was described as a loving, generous and kind person who brought joy to those in her company and made others feel special. Mary also devoted her time to raising awareness and funds for important causes and advocated for those in need of a voice. She unselfishly supported many charitable organizations such as the Heart and Stroke foundation, Cameron Awareness and the Ladies Auxiliary Stittsville Legion for many years. Most importantly, she was said to be a great bingo and dart player!

 

This park is particularly significant to Mary Durling and her children as the family spent a great deal of time enjoying this space and making memories in this exact location over the years.

 

For these reasons, I am very proud that we were able to make this event happen and that Mary Durling will be honoured for her work and dedication to this community through the naming of this park.

Commemorative Naming Approved for William Bradley Park in Stittsville

This week, City Council provided the final approval for the commemorating naming application to name a new park in Stittsville in honour of William Bradley.  Mr. Bradley left the Canadian Air Force in 1943 to run his late father’s business, a local Stittsville general store which led him to a career in the Stittsville retail food industry for 46 years. Long time Stittsville residents will remember the Bradley’s Grocery Store.  Mr. Bradley was actively involved in his community by way of various volunteer initiatives including the community’s volunteer fire department.

William Bradley Park will be located in the current Porter Place Development currently under construction in the south west end of Stittsville.  I am pleased that we will be able to honour this individual in Stittsville.

Grace Thompson Commemorative Naming Ceremony

The Ottawa Public Library invites residents to the Commemorative Naming Ceremony for the dedication of a room at the Stittsville branch in honour of Grace Thompson

The naming ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 5 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Stittsville Library Branch located at 1637 Stittsville Main Street. As space is limited please RSVP by Friday, September 22 2017 to Board@BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca .

Grace Thompson was a significantly involved resident in the Stittsville community. A local historian, author, and philanthropist, she was the first secretary-treasurer of the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society, a founding member of both the Stittsville Women’s Institute and the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers, and member of the original steering committee for the formation of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society. Grace was one of the first volunteers of the Stittsville Public Library when it opened in 1973 and continued to volunteer well into the 1980s.

The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultation on four separate naming proposals including two proposals in Stittsville. The proposals are:

• A proposal to name a future park located within the Porter Place development the “William Bradley Park”
• A proposal to name a future park located within the Potter’s Key Subdivision the “Allan Frederick Moore Park”
• A proposal to name a portion of the Richardson Ridge Recreational Trail system in the “Lyndall Winters Trail”
• A proposal to name a room within the John G. Mlacak Centre the “Susan Ruth Finch Meeting Room”

 

William Bradley Park (Ward 6 – Stittsville)

In recognition of the historical significance and extensive community service record of Mr. William Bradley to the Community of Stittsville, a proposal to name a future park in Ward 6 in his honour has been submitted to the City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee.

Allan Frederick Moore Park (Ward 6 – Stittsville)

In recognition of Allan Frederick Moore’s historical significance to the community, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name a future park, located at 611 Hazeldean Road within the Potter’s Key Subdivision, “Allan Frederick Moore Park”.

 

Allan Frederick Moore was born and raised in Ottawa, served in the Navy in World War 1 and worked as a lawyer in Ottawa from the 1930’s until his passing in 1969. As a member of the Queen’s Council, Mr. Moore was involved in many major real estate transactions in Ottawa throughout his career.

 

Lyndall Winters Trail (Ward 4 – Kanata North)

In recognition of Lyndall Winter’s excellence, courage and exceptional service to the citizens of Ottawa as well as his extensive community service record, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name a portion of the Richardson Ridge Recreational Trail system in Kanata North the “Lyndall Winters Trail”.

 

Lyndall Winters made significant contributions to the City of Ottawa and his country by way of his illustrious and lengthy career with the RCMP. Throughout his retirement, Mr. Winters redirected his focus to the advocacy of the preservation of the environment through various volunteer initiatives within his community.

 Susan Ruth Finch Meeting Room (Ward 4 – Kanata North)

In recognition of Susan Ruth Finch’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name a room within the John G. Mlacak Centre, located at 2500 Campeau Drive, the “Susan Ruth Finch Meeting Room”.

 

As long time resident of Kanata North, Ms. Finch developed strong ties to her community while teaching ceramics classes at the John G. Mlacak Centre, helping residents explore their creativity.

 

Each application will be undergoing a 30-day consultation period and pending committee approval, will then be presented to the CPSC and City Council for final approval.

I am always pleased to see more commemorative naming proposals submitted for Stittsville residents and I highly encourage all residents to take a moment to their their comments and thoughts before the deadline of July 18^th, 2017.
